Definition: “Quality Landscaping that conserves water and protects the environment”.
“Landscaping designed specifically for areas that are susceptible to drought, or for properties where water conservation is practiced. Derived from the Greek xeros meaning “dry,” the term, xeriscape means literally “dry landscape.”
I was just recently in Summerland, BC, and i came across some beautiful Ornamental Gardens. What really impressed me was this garden was not only breathtaking, but it showcased and educated the public on how to make thier gardens more water efficient through the use of Xeriscaping.
What i want to focus on is the obsession our culture has with lawns. Always needing to be green and pristine. I watched an episode of the nature of things the other night, and it focused on how much water is wasted on lawn maintenance. Xeriscape Landscaping is a step in the direction by encouraging less lawn space to conserve water, and to be able to have beautiful gardens in dryer climates, by utilizing indigenous plants that are “adapted to the local climate and consequently require less water”.
