I love food.  I love everything about it, from where it comes from, to how its prepared, and the best part when it hits my tongue.  Its always inspiring to see shows, and chefs who take great pride in understanding and spreading awareness about how food is meant to be raised, cultivated, eaten and enjoyed.  Food Network Canada has a great show with Chef Lynn Crawford, who goes around not only doing what she does best, cooking, but all the steps in between.  It really makes one appreciate all that is involved. The show is called Pitchin’ In, and you can view the episodes online, as well as check out amazing recipes.

The episode I really enjoyed was the Heritage Farms Turkey Episode. It reminded me of a fantastic book by Barbara Kingsolver: Animal, Vegetable, Miracle.  In particular, what makes Heritage Farm turkeys so special is that they are NOT factory farmed.  Thats right they get to run around, and live a long life, but they also get to get down and dirty.  What does sex have to do with anything?  Sadly factory farming has made a turkey a lethargic shell of its former self, and in doing so breed out the most basic thing for any species, natural copulation.  So the old joke getting pregnant with a turkey baster is even more relevant.  Most turkeys that you eat were not even conceived naturally.  Have a look for yourself, hope you like the series as much as I do.

Have a lovely sustainable day.
