What you need: a)scissors b)used bicycle tube c) felt/fabric scraps d)needle and thread e)cereal box/scrap cardboard
My key chain went caput the other day, so i thought a nice project would be to make a new one, and seeing as Valentines is just around the corner…also this gift not only comes from the heart but more importantly from the recycling bin, can’t really get any better than that.
Step 1: Cut out 3 hearts. One from your bicycle tube (this is the back), any size that floats your boat. Another from your felt/fabric at the same size (the front). Then cut out a slightly smaller cardboard heart (this will be sewn in between the two other hearts for stability).
Step 2: Decide on a design for your heart. For this one I cut out the shape of a key and sewed it on. Also consider stitching “Key 2 MY”. Have fun with it.
Step 3: Now make a key chain loop. From your scrap bike tube cut a strip 1.5cm in width and about 5 inches in length. Fold over to make a loop (you can sew the two ends together, or use trusty rubber cement).
Step 4: Finally blanket stitch the front and the back hearts together. * Dont forget to leave a space for the key chain loop, and make sure to place the cardboard heart in middle BEFORE you sew the heart shut. There is no magical way to sew the key chain loop, just have at er until its secure.
Step 5: ENJOY! Give it to your partner, or yourself.
Have a lovely sustainable day.
